The Thai visa exemption scheme that allows 30-day visa-free entry into Thailand for Maldivian tourists also allows extension of the visa for a further period of 30 days. Extension of visa can be obtained by applying at an Immigration Office in Thailand.

Extension of visa is usually allowed only once. Consecutive extension of visa more than once is allowed in exceptional circumstances and on a case by case basis. Hospitalised patients and their caregivers can usually extend their visa more than once. 

Hospital patients requesting an extension on medical grounds need to submit the following documents for visa extension:

- Filled application form TM7

- A copy of applicant's passport

- A letter requesting temporary stay issued by a physician of the hospital providing treatment to the patient 

Caregivers of hospital patients need to submit the following documents for visa extension:

- Filled application form TM7

- A copy of applicant's passport

- A letter confirming that the applicant is a caregiver and request for temporary stay issued by a physician of the hospital treating the patient

- Documents such as marriage certificate or birth certificate showing the relationship of the applicant to the patient or a confirmation letter to the effect from the Embassy

Maldivians visiting to meet Thai spouse or children of Thai nationality need to submit the following documents for visa extension:

- Application form TM7

- A copy of applicant's passport

- A copy of household registration certificate

- A copy of national identity of the Thai national

- A copy of marriage certificate or birth certificate

Overstaying in Thailand is a crime that may carry penalties such as fines and even imprisonment. If you need an extension, apply for it before your current visa expires.
